Six fake SARS operatives arrested in Rivers

Police have arrested six members of a gang carrying out kidnappings and robberies and parading themselves as operatives of Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS). The suspects were arrested yesterday in Port Harcourt, Rivers State. They were apprehended while wearing the outfit of the real SARS operatives and patrolling in a Hilux van in search of prey.

According to a source, the suspects were also armed with two pump action rifles and other weapons. A senior police officer, who disclosed this, said the suspects had confessed to some kidnappings and robberies in Rivers State and its environs. After the arrest, the suspects, Tony Raphael, Ifeanyi Okoye, Chigozie Onuigbo, Emeka Nwaiwu, Clark Sunday and Chinedu Isaiah, were transferred to the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department (SCIID), Port Harcourt.

When contacted, the state Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), SP Nnamdi Omoni, said he was aware of the incident, but said he was yet to get the full details. He said: “I am aware that some men parading themselves as SARS operatives have been arrested. They were arrested by SARS and have been taken to the SCIID, but I am yet to get the full details of their arrest.”
