MOSHOOD KASHIMAWO OLAWALE ABIOLA A SYMBOL OF DEMOCRACY.

The National Secretariat of the apex students governing body under the auspices of the National Association Of Nigerian Students(NANS) under the solid and active leadership of Comr. Aruna Kadiri joins Nigerians and specifically the Yorubas in remembering another historical June 12.

Twenty Four (24) years after the historic election which remains the freest & fairest in our Nation's history, Nigerians are still battling with the quest for an improved standard of living, qualitative and affordable education that can only be guaranteed by our ability to provide good and responsive leadership with policies that can meet the yearning and aspirations of an average Nigerian.

Its no rumor that the late MKO was denied of his mandate by the then military ruler, Ibrahim Babangida who called for another election after annulling the one that produced Abiola.
However, another military dictator, Sani Abacha took over from Babaginda and declared himself a military ruler.
Abacha subsequently arrested Abiola for declaring himself “President and Commander-in-Chief of the Federal republic of Nigeria” and proclaimed “a new Government of National Unity.”
The military ruler then threw MKO Abiola into prison for four years where he later died on July 7 1998 the day he was to be released.

There is therefore no better way to celebrate the remembrance of June 12 than for us as a nation to acknowledge and salute the great sacrifice made by the acclaimed winner of the June 12 1993 election Chief MKO Abiola with his life, and those who also lost their life's in the struggle, both the Igbos, Hausas and Yorubas which today has in turn given birth to the present democracy being enjoyed in our country.
NANS wishes to make it known that we say NO to the proposed #5 increment in the price of PMS and Nigerian Students will not hesitate to embark on a massive national protest if the decision is not withdrawn.
Amandla Ngawettu.
