A 30-year-old man, identified as Musbawu Amodu, has been arrested by the Nasarawa State Police Command for allegedly beating his 20-year-old wife to death following a domestic dispute over food preparation in Agyaragu, Obi Local Government Area of Nasarawa State.
The tragic incident, which has sparked outrage among residents, reportedly occurred after an argument between the couple escalated into violence when the deceased allegedly declined to prepare a meal.
Confirming the arrest in a statement, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) of the Nasarawa State Police Command, SP Ramhan Nansel, said the suspect was taken into custody after the police received a complaint that he had physically assaulted his wife, who later died from the injuries she sustained.
According to the police spokesperson, preliminary investigations revealed that the suspect admitted to attacking his wife during interrogation.
"The suspect confessed to committing the act out of anger after the deceased allegedly refused to prepare food. An argument ensued, which escalated into a physical altercation that ultimately resulted in her death," Nansel stated.
Police further disclosed that the couple had been married for six years and were parents to two young children—a boy and a girl—who have now been left without their mother.
The Commissioner of Police in Nasarawa State, CP Shettima Jauro Mohammed, condemned the incident and directed that the case be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in Lafia for a comprehensive investigation.
He assured members of the public that the command remains committed to ensuring justice is served and confirmed that the suspect would be charged to court upon the conclusion of investigations.
The incident has once again drawn attention to the devastating consequences of domestic violence and the need for peaceful conflict resolution within families. Stakeholders and advocacy groups have continued to urge couples to seek dialogue, counseling, or lawful intervention in resolving domestic disagreements, warning that violence can lead to irreversible tragedy.
