Senator Ishaku Abbo, who represents Adamawa North, has blamed the ongoing leadership crisis in the African Democratic Congress (ADC) on betrayal of agreement, internal selfishness, and external interference.
In a detailed statement posted on his verified Facebook page on Saturday, Abbo traced the root of the crisis to events following the resignation of Nafiu Bala Gombe and the entire National Working Committee (NWC).
The resignations were intended to allow Senator David Mark to assume leadership of the party.
According to Abbo, there was a clear prior agreement that Nafiu Bala would be appointed National Vice Chairman (North-East) under the new Mark-led executive.
However, the new leadership allegedly reneged on this deal and instead installed Babachir David Lawal in the position.
He quoted Lawal as reportedly saying: “How can a small boy like Nafiu Bala become the regional deputy chairman in a zone that has senior figures like a former Vice President and a former Secretary to the Government of the Federation?” Abbo said Bala felt belittled by the development and rejected a lower position offered to him.
The crisis escalated on Wednesday when the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) de-recognised both the David Mark-led faction and the Nafiu Bala faction, citing a Court of Appeal judgment.
Abbo urged all parties involved to resolve the matter amicably, warning that the internal wrangling and alleged external meddling threaten the future of the opposition coalition ahead of the 2027 general elections.
