Super Eagles left-back Bruno Onyemaechi may miss Nigeria’s friendly against Jordan on Tuesday after leaving the team camp in Antalya to be with his Portuguese partner, Ines Fontes, following the birth of their first child.

The 26-year-old, who had been conspicuously absent from Nigeria’s first training session after the 2-1 win over Iran, confirmed the news on social media, reposting a photo of himself holding his newborn with the caption, “Best gift ever.”

Fontes, a Portuguese content creator who has been with Onyemaechi since his days at Boavista, had shared photos of her baby bump on social media at the start of March to announce the pregnancy.

She shared photos from the hospital on Saturday to confirm the arrival of the baby, though the gender has not been publicly revealed.

Congratulations are already pouring in with the official Super Eagles X account writing, “Congratulations to Bruno Onyemaechi and his partner on the birth of their first child.”

Players are typically granted a few days away from camp following the birth of a child, making Onyemaechi’s involvement against Jordan uncertain.

However, coach Eric Chelle has adequate cover at left-back, with Zaidu Sanusi fit and available to fill in should the Olympiacos man not return in time.
