The Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) and the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU) have formally issued a strike notice to the federal government, threatening industrial action if the renegotiation of the 2009 salary structure agreement is not concluded promptly.
In a joint statement, the two unions expressed deep frustration over the federal government’s failure to fully implement and renegotiate key aspects of the 2009 agreement, despite repeated calls for dialogue. They warned that without urgent intervention, university non-teaching staff would have no choice but to embark on strike to press home their demands.
The unions highlighted that prolonged inaction has left workers disillusioned and could lead to widespread disruption of academic activities across Nigerian universities. They specifically appealed to the government to address the concerns swiftly to avoid setbacks to students’ academic calendars, examinations, and overall session timelines.
This latest development underscores the recurring labour tensions in Nigeria’s tertiary education sector, where issues of staff welfare, salary structures, and welfare packages continue to strain relations between university unions and the federal government.
