The ancient traditions and cultural pride of Egbaland took centre stage once again as the Executive Chairman of Obafemi Owode Local Government, Amb. Adesina ‘Lanre Ogunsola, reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to preserving Egba history during the annual Lisabi Festival held at Igbo Lisabi in Oba-Erin.
The colourful cultural event, which celebrates the legendary Egba hero Lisabi, attracted a distinguished gathering of royal fathers, chiefs, cultural enthusiasts, and dignitaries from across Ogun State and beyond.
Addressing attendees, Ogunsola described the festival as a vital symbol of unity, identity, and heritage for the Egba people. He noted that the annual celebration provides an opportunity for sons and daughters of Egbaland to reconnect with their roots, pay homage to their ancestors, and receive royal blessings.
“The Lisabi Festival defines our origin and heritage. It is a reminder of who we are as a people and why we must remain committed to preserving our history for future generations,” he said.
The council chairman highlighted ongoing efforts by his administration to upgrade the historic Lisabi site, including renovation works, construction, and modern design enhancements. According to him, the project—approved by Oba Adedotun Aremu Gbadebo—is aimed at safeguarding the cultural and historical significance of the sacred forest.
He further disclosed plans to improve inclusivity while respecting tradition. Noting that women are traditionally not permitted to enter the sacred site, Ogunsola announced that a permanent shed would be constructed at a designated distance to accommodate female participants during future festivals.
In his remarks, the Alake of Egbaland commended the initiative, describing it as a thoughtful and strategic effort aligned with earlier consultations. He expressed satisfaction with the transformation of the site, praising the council chairman’s dedication to preserving Egba culture and heritage.
“I am delighted with the level of innovation and commitment demonstrated. This project reflects a deep respect for our traditions and a vision for their sustainability,” the monarch said, while offering prayers for peace, progress, and continued prosperity in Egbaland.
The event also witnessed the presence of Gani Adams, who reaffirmed his longstanding loyalty to the Egba people. He emphasized his unwavering commitment to the unity and cultural advancement of Egbaland.
A host of traditional rulers and chiefs graced the occasion, including Obas from Orile-Imo, Imedu-Nla, and other neighbouring communities, alongside prominent Egba chiefs and community leaders.
The 39th Lisabi Day celebration concluded with prayers, cultural displays, and renewed calls for the preservation of Egba heritage as a cornerstone of identity and unity in Ogun State.
The event once again underscored the enduring relevance of tradition in modern governance, as leaders and custodians of culture continue to work hand in hand to protect and promote the rich legacy of Egbaland.
