A quiet residential community in Sagamu, Ogun State, was thrown into shock after a middle-aged man, identified as Mr. Ayoola Ayanwale, was found dead in what authorities suspect to be a case of suicide, hours after he allegedly killed his wife, Ayobami, at their home in River Valley Estate.
The incident reportedly occurred on Thursday, January 8, following what residents described as a heated disagreement between the couple. Neighbours said they were alerted by unusual noises from the apartment and rushed to the scene, where Ayobami was found critically injured. She was immediately taken to a nearby hospital for medical attention but was later confirmed dead by doctor Amebo Newspaper NG learnt.
According to residents, the deceased woman, a mother of three, reportedly spoke briefly while being rushed to the hospital before she succumbed to her injuries shortly after arrival. Medical personnel were said to have explained that the injuries affected her breathing.
Residents further alleged that after the incident, Mr. Ayanwale returned to the apartment and attempted to clean up the scene before leaving the area.
A brother of the deceased alleged that the attack occurred in the presence of the couple’s three children, a development that has further deepened public outrage and sorrow over the incident.
Less than 12 hours later, on Friday, January 9, Mr. Ayanwale was reportedly found in distress in an open field in the Sotubo area of Ogun State. He was later pronounced dead by a medical doctor. Items recovered at the scene included a bottle containing a suspected liquid substance, two mobile phones, a voter’s card, and an ATM card.
Confirming the development, the spokesperson of the Ogun State Police Command, DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi, said the police are aware of the incident and that a detailed statement would be issued following preliminary investigations.
The tragic event has sparked renewed conversations around domestic violence, family disputes, and the need for early intervention and support systems within communities. Residents of River Valley Estate described the couple as relatively quiet, making the incident all the more disturbing.
As investigations continue, the police have assured the public that all circumstances surrounding both deaths will be thoroughly examined.
