Yoruba leaders, under the umbrella of the Oduduwa Integrity Association, have strongly condemned a recent statement made by Mr. Daniel Bwala, a politician of northern extraction, who described Lagos State as “a no man’s land.”
Bwala’s comments, which have sparked widespread outrage, particularly among Yoruba communities, have been described as insensitive and historically inaccurate. Yoruba leaders argue that Lagos has always been a Yoruba territory, deeply rooted in the cultural and traditional heritage of the Yoruba people.
Responding to the controversy, the Oduduwa Integrity Association noted that such statements risk fanning the flames of division and undermining Nigeria’s fragile unity. The group stressed that Lagos is not only a historical Yoruba land but also constitutionally recognized as part of the Southwest geopolitical zone.
In their statement, the association affirmed that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, like every Nigerian president, possesses the constitutional authority to implement infrastructural projects and development initiatives across the nation. They emphasized that Lagos, being the economic hub of the country and the President’s home base, cannot be singled out or stripped of rightful federal development attention.
“The claim that Lagos is ‘no man’s land’ is false, provocative, and dismissive of the Yoruba heritage,” the group stated. “Traditionally and constitutionally, Lagos belongs to the Yoruba people. Any attempt to distort this fact is null and void.”
The association disclosed that a formal petition has been submitted to the Director-General of the Department of State Services (DSS), the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, the Chief of Army Staff, and the Inspector-General of Police. The petition urges the authorities to caution against divisive rhetoric and to safeguard national unity.
Yoruba leaders further cautioned public figures against making careless remarks about Lagos or any part of the federation, stressing that Nigeria’s peace and unity must be preserved through mutual respect and recognition of each region’s cultural identity.
“Lagos has always been in and remains an integral part of Yoruba land. We will continue to defend our cultural and historical heritage while supporting development initiatives that benefit all Nigerians,” the statement concluded.
