54 youth pilots who kick-started the Ogun Broiler Project in December 2019 with 54,000 birds (1,000 birds each), and also made an average profit of N130,000 each for the first cycle of six weeks then, sold another 54,000 birds to offtakers today for the second cycle.

The Ogun Broiler Project was set up to create jobs and empower our youths. In the first cycle of this project, the 54 pilot youths who reared 1,000 broilers each with a mortality rate of less than 3% and an average weight of 1.9kg made an average profit of One Hundred and Forty Thousand Naira (N140,000.00) within 6 weeks (42days) of production. This project has also spurred the poultry value chain in the State. This project delivered 110tons of poultry meat to the offtaker in the first cycle, thereby reducing the importation of poultry products and also placing the Ogun State at the vanguard of poultry meat production in Nigeria.

One of the outputs of this project is that Ogun State has 54 youths as experts who in their first attempt, broke all known and available records in reduced mortality rate, feed conversion ratio and profitability.
The fact that these broilers were raised to maturity during this pandemic period, in conformity with Government advisories and support, is an indication that Ogun State Government’s Agricultural Response Plan/Strategy for COVID-19, is on track. Government will respond appropriately to the current registration for participation based on the success achieved in this cycle. These youth pilots are still expected to run two additional cycles to complete four cycles, before they are released for further support as next level commercial producers.

These youth pilots are State ambassadors and success stories to be showcased when State wide implementation of the Ogun Broiler Project begins.
