BETWEEN HUNGER AND DEATH... - Rotimi Makinde

In the next coming weeks, we are likely to be in a better position to define which of these factors is preferable, Hunger or Death. We are at this moment forcing our Government to relapse the mandatory precautionary measures to fight this endemic disease. We cry for food, we cry for the lockdown and failed in our compliances. Our world in Nigeria is certainly one of the most terrible contradictions...Being hungry means missing meals which is often temporary but death is always an irreparable loss which means an end to whatever agitation in life.

Do we really need a very rigid Government to run away from death? I keep on feeling we are not serious in Nigeria...The choice is now Ours. Nigeria is at a crossroads!

Many countrymen don't even believe in this coronavirus epidemic, that is the reason they pressurised the Government to lift the movement restrictions. Like a common saying that, we don't really get to understand things until it happens to us...

Subsequent events starting from Monday, will justify Government's decisions. Every right thinking resident should be personally careful from tomorrow in doing things. That is if we can be careful enough, considering the inevitable contraction of this disease in places where the lockdown have been lifted.

Should I talk about the overpopulation in Lagos alone? Should I talk about the likable misconduct from the commuters to violate the measures taken to prevent COVID 19? Should I talk about the ignoramus residents who wouldn't mind doing anything to put food on the table even if it will cost their lives? To mention few hazards that will be recorded from 4th of May, 2020. Are we really ready?

In the meantime, let's take it upon ourselves to be protective. You don't have to step out if it's not necessary that you do. This shouldn't be a comparison between who's being lazy and hard-working. It is just what we need to be cautioned about. Stay home if you have no cogent reason to be outside. To those who will be moving from one place to the other, the preventive measures should be done religiously and guarded jealously.
