Massive Celebration Breaks Out As Governor Amosun Pays Salaries Of Ogun State Workers Owed By Previous Administration

It was a tale of massive celebration in Ogun state after Emmanuel Bankole the Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress, Ogun State chapter, made a disclosure that the outgoing Governor Ibikunle Amosun has fulfilled his promise to pay the workers’ deductions in the state.

The NLC Chairman told a correspondent from THE PUNCH exclusively on phone on Tuesday as he cleared the air on the insinuation which implied that the Governor has reneged on his promise to pay the deductions.

Amosun had met some backlogs of outstanding deductions owed the workers in the state since he assumed office in 2011.

But only a few weeks ago, the Governor had during the Workers’ Day celebration which was held in Abeokuta told the workers they would begin to receive credit alert after a period of 24 hours.

But a few days after, workers in the state were yet to receive any alert, with this development prompting insinuations from the workers that the Governor might not have paid this money.

Our correspondent further gathered that the N20.2 billion had been paid as was announced by the Governor before the Workers’ Day occassion.

It was further garnered that the reason for delay in the payment was due to the actions of the administrators of cooperatives who reportedly held on to the money.

When quizzed on if the workers have started receiving alerts, the NLC chairman made the confirmation that a good number of workers have began to receive credit alerts.

He said, “(A) good number of them (workers), yes, have been paid”.

He, however, said that local governments workers were not so lucky as there were yet to receive alerts.

He said “Except for local governments workers, most have not been paid.

“All the deductions have been paid. I can confirm this to you”.

The NLC Chairman, however, revealed that the outgoing Governor was yet to make payments of the leave bonus and contributory pensions.

“Except the leave bonus and contributory pensions”, he said.
