The police in Lagos State, on Tuesday, said it arrested a 13-man suspected armed robbery gang that had been terrorising motorists and residents of Ogudu and Oworonsoki areas in Lagos.
The Lagos State Police Command’s spokesman, DSP Kenneth Nwosu, who confirmed the arrest to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), said the gang had been operating in the past two weeks.
Nwosu said the gang allegedly attacked motorists at Oworonsoki expressway, Ogudu-Orioke and Ogudu road.
"We have received several complaints about their activities. They always operate during heavy traffic on the roads or when it is raining. They usually smashed the windscreen and side glasses of vehicles, particularly the ones occupied by female motorists and robbed them of their valuables.
"Our men at Ogudu Police Division, led by the Divisional Police Officer, CSP Chioma Ajunwa, using intelligence reports from members of the public, arrested them at different times," he said.
"Eight out of the suspects who confessed to the crime are due to go to court this week. Four have been transferred to the Special Anti-Robbery Squad for further investigation, while one is still with Ogudu Division," he said.
One of the victims, a banker, Miss Buki Adefela, who was robbed at Ogudu-Orioke area, told NAN that she was forced to wind down her car’s side glass while on traffic.
"I saw a man knocking on the side glass of my car, asking me to wind down. When I refused to obey him because I don’t know him, he hit the glass.
"Thank God the glass did not break; then I wound down. Three other men armed with pistols came around and collected my handset, bag and other valuables.
"After that, they went to another vehicles behind me. I then rushed out and ran away leaving my car. I later came back to take my car. I reported the case at Ogudu Police Station," the victim said.
